Help Viewing PDI Articles

Navigating The Feature Article:

The following navigation features are available in the Toolbar frame on the left of your screen:

Contents - Brings up the list of article sections. Clicking on a title will bring up that section of the article in this frame. (If the article you are viewing is not broken into sections, this will take you to the first page of the article.)

Search - Brings up the search screen. From the search screen you can search the entire article for specific keywords/subjects. The results will give you quick access to the pages that contain the information you seek. This is different from the Search the References frame which may be at the bottom of your screen (only available for some articles). For help on the Search the References frame, see below, or click on the help icon in that frame.

Download - Brings up a screen showing the download options for the current article. Available options will vary from article to article, but may include options to download the full text of the article, reference files for the article, a distributable version of the article (for people without internet access) and viewer. Articles and reference files may be offered in Microsoft Word Format, Hypertext (.HTML), or as plain text (.TXT). The distributable version is an executable (.EXE) file for PCs.

Discussion Forum - Allows you to send a message to the members of the discussion list by bringing up Netscape mail. If you have not yet joined the mailing list, you may want to read about it on the Members Page of the main PDI site.

Help - Brings up this page!

You can always return to the main PDI site by clicking on the PDI logo in the upper-left corner of the screen.

At the top and bottom of each page of the article are navigation buttons:

These will move you, respectively, to the previous or next page in the article.

Searching the References
(Not available for all articles)

Reference search type: Look for:   Go! Help

This feature allows you to search the article reference database by author or subject/keywords. Once your search is complete, you can then perform a further search on either the author(s) or title/subject.

For example, select the "Author" search type and type "Smith" in the Look for field and click on the go! button. Results are displayed in the following 4 lines:

Reference number - refers to where in the list of references it can be found.

Author(s) - shows the list of authors of the paper/article. "Search by Author" appears at the beginning of the line and, if clicked, will launch a new browser window and conduct a further search on the author(s) using Infoseek.

Title - displays the title of the paper/article. "Search by Title" appears at the beginning of the line and, if clicked, will launch a new browser window and conduct a further search on the title/subject using Infoseek.

Reference - displays the source information.

Click on New Search at the bottom of the search results to conduct another search on the Reference database.
