There were 188 culture results available from nares, 226 from periexit smears, and 224 from sinus washouts. Of 75 simultaneously positive cultures taken from nares and sinus washouts, only 37 (49%) grew identical organisms. Similar comparisons for nares and periexit smears showed 38 (39%) identical organisms in 97 simultaneously positive cultures. Identical organisms were found in 57 of 82 simultaneously positive cultures (70%) taken from sinus washouts and periexit smears. If negative cultures in both places were considered as identical culture results and added to the identical organisms, the comparisons were as follows: washout/nares = 44/1186 (24%); periexit smears/nares = 46/186 (25%); washouts/periexit smears = 152/224 (68%).
